Abestone Hard Enduro 2026 Preview: Lettenbichler Leads Championship

The 2026 Hard Enduro World Championship heads to Italy this weekend for the Abestone Hard Enduro, with the championship battle entering a crucial phase between 4 and 6 September.

Germany's Manuel Lettenbichler arrives at Abestone as the championship leader, but Britain's Mitch Brightmore has kept the pressure firmly on throughout the opening four rounds. With just 15 points separating the leading pair, the Italian event could prove decisive in the fight for the 2026 title.

Behind them, Bulgaria's Teodor Kabakchiev and Britain's Ashton Brightmore remain within striking distance, while Billy Bolt and Mario Roman are also looking to make a late-season charge.

Lettenbichler Holds the Championship Advantage

Lettenbichler currently sits at the top of the standings with 117 points, having built his advantage through a remarkably consistent opening campaign.

The German has scored at least 27 points at each of the four completed championship events listed in the current standings. His strongest result came at Lagares, where he collected 33 points, while he also scored 29 at Forza Orza and 28 at Alestrem.

That consistency is perhaps the most important factor heading into Abestone. In Hard Enduro, simply finishing can be as important as outright speed, with technical terrain, long race distances and unpredictable conditions capable of dramatically changing the classification.

Lettenbichler therefore enters Italy as the obvious favourite, but he cannot afford to relax.

Mitch Brightmore Within Striking Distance

Mitch Brightmore is the rider with the most to gain at Abestone.

The British rider has accumulated 102 points and sits just 15 points behind Lettenbichler. His campaign has been characterised by strong individual performances, including a superb 32-point haul at Silver Kings.

Brightmore has already demonstrated that he can challenge for the top positions, and another strong result in Italy could significantly reduce the championship deficit.

A victory or near-perfect weekend could put genuine pressure on Lettenbichler, particularly if the championship leader encounters problems.

Why Abestone Could Change the Championship

Abestone is particularly important because Hard Enduro can produce much larger swings in championship fortunes than conventional circuit racing.

A rider who finishes just outside the podium can still score valuable points, while mechanical problems, crashes, fatigue or failing to complete the event can have a huge effect on the standings.

For Lettenbichler, the objective should therefore be clear: finish strongly and protect the championship lead.

For Brightmore, the situation is different. He needs to put maximum pressure on the German and look for an opportunity to take points out of the leader.

If Brightmore wins while Lettenbichler suffers a difficult weekend, the championship could suddenly become much tighter heading into the final events of the season.

Teodor Kabakchiev Still Has a Chance

Although the gap at the top has grown, Teodor Kabakchiev cannot be ignored.

The Bulgarian currently has 74 points, putting him 43 points behind Lettenbichler. His results have been generally consistent, although his 6-point score at Forza Orza damaged what had otherwise been a strong campaign.

Kabakchiev has already shown the pace required to fight at the front, and Abestone provides an opportunity to close the gap.

He probably needs more than simply another podium if he is to become a genuine title threat, but a victory combined with a difficult result for the riders ahead could completely change the complexion of the standings.

Ashton Brightmore Could Be One to Watch

Another rider capable of influencing the championship is Ashton Brightmore.

The younger British rider is fourth overall with 73 points, just one point behind Kabakchiev.

His results have shown significant potential. Ashton scored 23 points at Silver Kings and 24 at Forza Orza, demonstrating that he is capable of consistently fighting near the sharp end of the field.

With his brother Mitch already fighting for the championship lead, Abestone could be particularly interesting for the Brightmore family.

While Mitch is chasing the overall title, Ashton could play a major role in the battle for the podium positions and potentially take points away from Lettenbichler and Kabakchiev.

Billy Bolt Looking for a Big Result

Billy Bolt arrives in Italy fifth in the championship on 65 points.

The British rider's season has been difficult to assess because his results have fluctuated considerably. He scored an impressive 29 points at Alestrem, followed by 15 at Lagares, but registered no points at Silver Kings before recovering with 21 at Forza Orza.

That makes Bolt one of the biggest wildcards in the championship battle.

If he can reproduce his strongest form at Abestone, he could challenge for victory and potentially take a significant number of points from the riders immediately ahead of him.

Mario Roman and Eddie Karlsson in the Fight

Mario Roman sits sixth with 62 points and remains another rider capable of producing a podium challenge.

The Spaniard has been consistent enough to remain within touching distance of Bolt, although he will need a particularly strong Abestone result if he is to move significantly higher in the championship.

Sweden's Eddie Karlsson is seventh with 49 points, while James Moore, Lorenzo Gandola and Matthew Green complete the current top 10.

For these riders, Abestone represents an opportunity to move up the standings while the riders ahead of them fight over the championship.

Our Abestone Race Prediction

Manuel Lettenbichler has to be considered the favourite.

The championship leader has been the most consistent rider across the opening four events, and that consistency makes him difficult to overlook. However, the pressure will be enormous because every point matters with Mitch Brightmore only 15 points behind.

Mitch Brightmore is our second major contender. The British rider has already shown that he has the speed to win, and his championship position means he has every reason to attack rather than simply settle for a safe result.

Teodor Kabakchiev is another rider who could be in the mix for victory, particularly if the race develops into a battle of endurance and technical ability.

We also expect Billy Bolt to be one of the riders capable of upsetting the established order. If Bolt can find the form that produced his 29-point result at Alestrem, he could be a serious podium contender.

The Championship Battle After Abestone

The biggest question is whether Abestone will reinforce Lettenbichler's advantage or give Brightmore a route back into the title fight.

With Lettenbichler currently holding a 15-point advantage, a relatively small change in the finishing order could have a significant impact.

If Lettenbichler wins, the German would strengthen his position and put additional pressure on his rivals. If Brightmore takes victory while finishing ahead of Lettenbichler by a significant margin, the championship gap could be dramatically reduced.

The most intriguing scenario would be a difficult weekend for Lettenbichler. A non-finish or major points loss could transform a championship that currently appears to favour the German into a genuine two-way battle.

Abestone Could Be a Turning Point

With the championship leaders separated by only 15 points, Abestone arrives at exactly the right moment in the season.

Lettenbichler has consistency on his side. Brightmore has momentum and the need to attack. Kabakchiev remains close enough to capitalise on mistakes, while Ashton Brightmore, Bolt and Roman are all capable of disrupting the fight at the front.

That combination makes the Italian round one of the most important events of the 2026 Hard Enduro season.

Our prediction? Lettenbichler remains the rider to beat, but we expect Brightmore to push him all the way. If the championship leader can stay out of trouble, he should leave Italy still at the top of the standings. However, another major Brightmore performance could turn the final stages of the championship into a fascinating title battle.

Abestone Hard Enduro takes place in Italy from 4–6 September 2026.
